Survey Crew Chief Job Description

Apex Engineering, LLC, which serves both the private and public sector is currently seeking a talented, organized, and driven individual for Survey Crew Chief in our Tacoma, Washington office. This individual will lead a field crew, which is responsible for creating land surveys for construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey tasks. He or she often engages with property owners, local officials, supervisors, engineers, and contractors. The chief oversees surveying work and offers input and expertise. He or she also trains the survey crew on how to use surveying equipment and conduct surveys using proven procedures.  Projects to be surveyed may involve: subdivisions, transportation, educational facilities, and military facilities, etc.   He or she will also serve as a responsible technical lead, performing technical tasks and coordinating the use of state-of-the-art resources to accomplish multiple/concurrent infrastructure and development projects.  Must be able to work effectively and communicate regularly with clients; federal, state, local agencies, contractors and staff.

Essential duties include:

  • Complete all assigned tasks in a timely fashion, be diligent in field procedures and maintain company standards at all times.
  • Possess time management skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks is desirableand supervise additional staff members assisting in survey assignments.
  • Adhere to QA/QC procedures and note taking. Follow instructions/work orders from project managers.
  • Proficiency with Leica Robotic Total Stations and Topcon GPS and Carlson Data Collectors.
  • 3-5 years of survey crew chief experience including Construction layout, ALTA and Boundary Survey.
  • Ability to read and comprehend Construction Plans
  • Strong math skills.
  • Valid Washington State Drivers' license and the ability to quickly obtain federal access credentials for military and port facilities
  • Ability to organize field notes and execute field staking.
  • Strong verbal/communication skills and computer skills.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
  • Proficient with Standards/Code lists and survey requirements.
  • Review and follow project scope, keeping all project information and electronic files well organized.
  • LSIT or CST credentials a plus. 
  • Strong desire for obtaining Professional Licensure.
