City of University Place - Town Center

Apex Engineering is providing all surveying and civil engineering services to create a new downtown center for this growing community. Apex performed a comprehensive boundary and topographic survey on the 92 acre site. The boundary consisted of over 20 different parcels with widely divergent legal descriptions. Aerial and ground surveys were used for the mapping portion of this project. Apex is also providing construction staking services for the construction of the new parking structure and access roadway.

Port of Tacoma - East Blair One Warf

The project is located on the East Blair Waterway at the Port of Tacoma facilities, Tacoma, Washington. The project is comprised of building a 1200-foot warf and 23 acres of associated cargo handling lay down area. Apex provided surveying quality control for the construction of the wharf. Apex was required to check both the horizontal alignment and elevations of the cargo crane rails.

The tolerances for this work needed to meet or exceed 1/16th of an inch; therefore Apex developed procedures to ensure the contractor met the requirements as specified. Apex also performed monitoring on the wharf bulkhead. Construction activities and staging on the site has caused the wharf to shift and the Port of Tacoma wanted to determine the magnitude and direction of the movement. Apex performed monitoring on the bulkhead and our office staff produced reports for the Port of Tacoma to review.

Jubilee Master Community

Located in Thurston County. Apex Engineering performed boundary and topographic mapping for this 830 acre project located in Section 26, and 35, Township 19 North, Range 1 West, W.M. The survey control was obtained utilizing GPS techniques supplemented with conventional ground traverse using robotic total stations. The areas supplemented were those areas where satellite coverage was not adequate to maintain control network accuracy.

The topographic mapping was primarily obtained through aerial mapping which Apex subcontracted for. The mapping was provided in a digital format which was enhanced in vegetated areas by traditional ground methods utilizing GPS and optical instruments. The entire project utilized the NAD83/91 horizontal datum and NAVD88 vertical datum.

Port of Seattle / Sound Transit

Sound Transit and the Port of Seattle are working together to extend the Link light rail service to Sea-Tac International Airport. The Port’s roadway construction project will make it easier to get in and out of the airport and will provide space for Sound Transit’s Link light rail trains. A new return-to-terminal loop will be located near South 160th Street, with the old loop being demolished to make way for the light rail station. The light rail station will also connect to a new pedestrian bridge over International Boulevard, which will strengthen the connection between the airport and the surrounding SeaTac community.

Apex is currently providing construction surveying services for two construction contracts at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Apex is currently providing construction staking for Mowat Construction Co. for the Link Light Rail aerial track and roadway improvement and the new SeaTac Aerial Link Station.
